The Music Department at Grace features some of the most accomplished musicians in the South Bend area. Victoria Garrett, our Music Director, has performed nationally and teaches music at Bethel College. David Eicher was the editor of a church hymnal and serves as accompanist to the choirs at Saint Mary’s College in South Bend. Our Chancel Choir is directed by Zen Kuriyama, and accompanied by organist David Eicher. The choir accompanies both worship services from September through May. Choir Practice is held on Thursday nights at 7:15 pm. Soprano Victoria Garrett made her New York solo debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall while still a graduate student at the Manhattan School of Music. She has appeared with the San Francisco Opera, the New York City Opera, Indiana Opera North, and other regional companies. Garrett is well known as a Christian songwriter. She and Grammy-nominated composer Buryl Red, wrote a musical entitled The 34th Christmas, which had its world premiere in 1998. It was performed at Grace United Methodist in 2009.Garrett has written and/or recorded for curriculums published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston and more than a dozen national denominations. Zen is pursuing a Masters in Sacred Music in Choral Conducting at the University of Notre Dame, and already holds a Master in Music in Voice Performance from Stony Brook University. His Bachelor degree in music is from the University of Hawaii, the state he calls home. In addition to using Grace Church as his internship site for choral conducting, Zen will also hold an internship directing the Notre Dame Children’s Choir. Zen has previous experience in conducting, having been the Graduate Assistant Conductor of the Stony Brook Chorale and Camerata Singers, the Berkshire Choral International where he was the Conducting Apprentice, and as the singer/assistant conductor at St. Peter’s By-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Bay Shore, NY. Zen also served as a section leader at the Lutheran Church of Honolulu for two years. As a professional choral singer, Zen has performed at Carnegie Hall and has been actively contracted by Temple Beth Torah in Melville, NY. He has a beautiful voice and has performed in the Stony Brook Opera and the Stony Brook Baroque Ensemble, as well as numerous other venues. Zen is a proud member of the American Choral Directors Association and the American Musicological Society. David Eicher is a nationally known musician who has just returned to Saint Mary’s College after spending six years at the Presbyterian Publishing House, where he was the editor in charge of creating the new Presbyterian hymnal. He is a Ruling Elder of Presbyterian Church, the past president of the Hymn Society of the United States and Canada, the past president of the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, the former assistant director and current accompanist of the South Bend Chamber Singers, the former accompanist of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus and is the current accompanist for the College Choirs of Saint Mary’s College.
